e-Learning for Educators
Mississippi e-Learning for Educators uses an online delivery model to provide effective professional development, leading to gains in an educator’s content knowledge, improvements in teaching practices and increased student achievement. Participants learn and share best practices and instructional resources through interactive communities. For additional information on e-Learning courses, contact Jill Boteler at 601.432.6203 or jill.boteler@mpbonline.org.
The e-Learning for Educators initiative is funded by a U.S. Department of Education Ready to Teach Grant involving eight states (AL, DE, KY, MS, MO, NH, PA, and WV). The central goal of the project is to establish an effective and sustainable model of online professional development to help address statewide teacher quality needs and have an impact on student achievement.
Each state participating in the e-Learning for Educators initiative has a state leadership team consisting of staff from the State Department of Education and a partner public broadcasting station. Additionally, the Education Development Center (EDC) and Boston College are providing support in the areas of implementation and evaluation.
Online learning can build capacity for technology integration and help school districts meet the challenge of providing effective professional development for teachers and administrators. In addition, vibrant, interactive communities of educators can be built online to have significant effects on classroom teacher practices.
Mississippi e-Learning for Educators provides high-quality, research-based, online professional development facilitated by exemplary Mississippi educators.
Courses last for seven weeks and emphasize theory-to-practice applications. Course work includes online discussions, reflection, readings, and projects. Course participants receive a certificate of participation and/or CEU credits (for eligible participants).
Mississippi Interactive Video Network (MIVN)
Distance learning uses a variety of educational technology to deliver course content, enhance classroom instruction and provide resources not available on the local level. Some technologies distance learning incorporates include videoconferencing, streaming and downloading from the Internet, online professional development, CD-ROM, satellite, datacasting, and computers. Teachers and students no longer need to feel isolated. The MIVN can bring a variety of resources and materials directly to your school.
The MIVN at MPB is designed to enhance learning through the utilization of technology as a powerful instrument that assists educators in offering new opportunities to all students, regardless of their location. A teacher can instruct students assembled in a class hundreds of miles away through state-of-the-art technology! High school courses, university credit courses, staff in-service, enrichment activities, and special events are all available on the network.
Connections with interactive video networks throughout Mississippi and with other states and countries are all managed from the statewide hub. MPB in conjunction with the Institutes of Higher Learning deliver courses such as mathematics, language arts, foreign language, chemistry, engineering, and ACT test preparation.
Facilitators have a critical role in the success of classes on the Interactive Video Network. The facilitator's role as classroom manager is to make the teacher's job easier. Teachers and facilitators should be comfortable in using the equipment and troubleshooting basic equipment problems. Contact Jill Boteler at jill.boteler@mpbonline.org for additional information.
