The MIVN, housed at our headquarters, is designed to enhance learning through the utilization of technology as a powerful instrument that assists educators in offering new opportunities to all students, regardless of economic status or location. A teacher can instruct students that are assembled in a class hundreds of miles away through state of the art technology! High school courses, university credit courses, staff in-service, enrichment activities, and special events are all available on the network. Connections with other interactive video networks within the state, such as the Community College Network or the Institutions of Higher Learning Network, as well as with other states and countries, are all managed from the statewide control center housed at MPB. MPB coordinates the delivery of instruction for 106 of the K-12 sites in the Mississippi Interactive Video Network and usage of those sites in conjunction with IHL delivered courses as necessary. K-12 teachers throughout the state deliver a variety of instruction including mathematics, language arts, foreign language and advanced placement courses through over 79 conference connections per day to an average of 1,413 students each semester. MPB also coordinated the delivery of professional development opportunities for over 1300 K-12 teachers over the Mississippi Interactive Video Network and publicizes these opportunities through a monthly newsletter. Over 187 students participated in special instructional programs on topics including chemistry, engineering, and ACT test preparation.
Facilitators have a critical role in the success of classes on the Interactive Video Network. The facilitator's role as classroom manager is to make the teacher's job easier. Teachers and facilitators should be comfortable in using the equipment and troubleshooting basic equipment problems.
Please refer to the downloadable Facilitator Manual for instructions on classroom facilitation.
