PBS KIDS® Raising Readers Corner

for children ages 2 to 8

The “word on the street” is Brandon Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is something to “roar” about for 2009 with the PBS KIDS® Raising Readers Corner.  It will be spectacular, fantastic, amazing!

Fun-filled activities from PBS KIDS® Raising Readers series Sesame Street, Word World, SUPER WHY!, Between the Lions, Martha Speaks, and the Electric Company will get everyone excited about reading.

Visit the PBS KIDS® Raising Readers Corner at the Brandon Public Library anytime during their business hours with a parent or friend to explore reading activities and games. It’s a colorful and inviting area featuring the PBS characters you love and is a small setting where children can play games on a computer, read a book, or watch an educational and interactive literacy skill-building DVD.

The PBS KIDS® Raising Readers Corner gives children the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills through fun and engaging multi-media platforms ranging from self-directed worksheets, online reading games, online videos, or parent-led activities using media clips from a broad selection of the PBS KIDS shows.

All activities are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations and encompasses skills such as letter recognition, print awareness and vocabulary instruction.

About PBS KIDS® Raising Readers
PBS KIDS is the number one trusted educational media brand for parents.  Combining the local relationships of stations and libraries with the powerful, engaging characters, is a winning combination.  This national initiative incorporates research-based methodologies focused on how children learn from media and employs a 360-degree approach, surrounding children and families with learning opportunities where they live and are most likely to interact.

PBS KIDS Raising Readers is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Ready to Learn grant and is a cooperative agreement of the U.S. Department of Education, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS and the Ready to Learn Partnership to help children ages 2 -8 build reading skills.  For more information, visit www.pbskids.org/read.
