The 2009 Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest was a great success in Mississippi.  Approximately 400 entries were received.  Many thanks to all participants in this year’s contest. Every participant has earned the honorary title of Reading Rainbow Young Writer & Illustrator and will be receiving a Certificate of Achievement signed by Levar Burton, host of the PBS series Reading Rainbow.

This year’s winners have been identified in each grade level, and the entries from the 1st Place winners have been forwarded for inclusion in the national competition. 

The local winners are as follows:

Kindergarten:

1st Place – Angela J. (How Rainbows Came to Be)

2nd Place – Tatum P. (Sallye’s Butterfly)

3rd Place – Maddie G. (Lion Puppets)

First Grade:

1st Place – Jody M. (Commander Echo and the Swamp Creature)

2nd Place – Morgan B. (Ricco the Turtle)

3rd Place – Carly P. (The Horse and the Magic Rock)

Second Grade:

1st Place – Steve I. (A Journey to Freedom)

2nd Place (tie) – Peyton K. (Dinosaur Dream, Yes or No?)

                             Elisa S. (Smart Fish)

3rd Place – Kenneth M. (Fantastic Animals)

Honorable Mention – Jack S. (When I Grow Up)

Third Grade:

1st Place – Elizabeth C. (Once a Little Dragon)

2nd Place – Laura I. (I Wish I Could Fly)

3rd Place – Austin H. (The Ants)
