Here in the swamp, lore is as mysterious as the backwaters themselves. Some local residents claim they hear strange sounds on the river. Bill Shimp has heard it for decades.

"In the legend of the Singing River, it is believed that the Pascagoula Indians marched into the river singing as they drowned so they wouldn't be captured by an invading tribe. I've heard it five different times and its something that is different. It may be a legend, but the sound is actually there. This is no lying about that part of it. It's there. It sounds something similar to ..."ohhhh...ahhhh..ohhh."
