MPB Board Chairman Mavilou Burns

Honored for Service to Public Broadcasting

( Jackson )-"Public broadcasting is a valuable service to this state and should not be taken for granted," says Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) Board Chairman Mavilou Burns. "As a teacher, I can say with all sincerity that MPB enhances the lives of many, especially our earliest learners."

Burns' comments follow four years of service on the Board of Directors for Mississippi Public Broadcasting. Burns, a Fulton native, was appointed in 2002 by Governor Ronnie Musgrove to represent elementary educators. MPB Executive Director Marie Antoon presented Burns with a crystal vase and words of praise for her support of MPB which was echoed by fellow MPB Board members.

"Mavilou's experience as an elementary school teacher and her commitment to education has been invaluable to MPB," says MPB Executive Director Marie Antoon. "We will miss her on the board but know she is a lifelong supporter of MPB and will continue to work to support our mission and the services we provide to communities statewide."

Burns served as MPB Board Vice-Chair in 2003 and 2004. For the last two years, Burns has served on the Advisory Board for the Emmy-award winning PBS children's television program, Between the Lions. As Chairman of the MPB Board, Burns served as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Public Broadcasting in Mississippi .

"During my time on the MPB Board I have been privileged to meet some of the most talented and interesting people in this state," says Burns. "That was made clearer to me following Hurricane Katrina. The role that MPB radio and the staff of the agency played in disseminating information statewide showed all of us that public broadcasting is a vital part of our state that deserves our support."

Burns has been a teacher in Mississippi for 30 years. She has taught kindergarten for the past seven years at Dorsey Attendance Center in Itawamba County where she has also taught second grade students for 23 years.
