NEWS RELEASE

( Jackson , Miss.) ¾ Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) announces the winners of the 2006 MPB Reading Rainbow Writers and Illustrators Contest . These eight winners from across the state entered their own stories with illustrations for judging and placed first or second in their grades:

 

Kindergarten

1st Place : Alex Glasco, Greenville , Miss. , " Funny Forest Friends"

2nd Place :  Geoffrey Owen Baring, Shelby , Miss. , "Journey to the New World "

 

First Grade

1st Place : Gracie McCraney, Jackson , Miss. , "Zorro's Dream"

2nd Place : Lilli Fulgham, Ackerman , Miss. , "Poof!"

 

Second Grade

1st Place : Andrew Newman, Hattiesburg , Miss. , "The Hidden Volcano"

2nd Place : Candace George, Pontotoc , Miss. , "I Want a Horse"

 

Third Grade

1st Place : Kelsey Hand, Mt. Olive , Miss. , "Niosha and the Blue Dolphin"

2nd Place : Blake Barham, Meridian , Miss. , "The Ant Who Made a Friend"

 

To honor each of these winners, MPB with its partners - Northpark Mall, Barnes & Noble, and Chick-fil-A at Dogwood Festival Market - hosted a two-day Reading Rainbow Contest Winners Celebration in Jackson .

 

These kindergarten through third grade students began their first day in the spotlight with sharing their own stories before audiences at Northpark Mall and Barnes & Noble, receiving gift certificates from both establishments, and ended with dinner, compliments of Chick-fil-A at Dogwood Festival Market

The celebration continued the next morning with breakfast and the recording of their stories in the MPB Radio Studio for future broadcast.
