Mississippi Public Broadcasting announces and honors 2006 Reading Rainbow Contest Winners |

( Jackson , Miss.) ¾ Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) announces the winners of the 2006 MPB Reading Rainbow Writers and Illustrators Contest . These eight winners from across the state entered their own stories with illustrations for judging and placed first or second in their grades:
Kindergarten 1st Place : Alex Glasco, Greenville , Miss. , " Funny Forest Friends" 2nd Place : Geoffrey Owen Baring, Shelby , Miss. , "Journey to the New World "
First Grade 1st Place : Gracie McCraney, Jackson , Miss. , "Zorro's Dream" 2nd Place : Lilli Fulgham, Ackerman , Miss. , "Poof!"
Second Grade 1st Place : Andrew Newman, Hattiesburg , Miss. , "The Hidden Volcano" 2nd Place : Candace George, Pontotoc , Miss. , "I Want a Horse"
Third Grade 1st Place : Kelsey Hand, Mt. Olive , Miss. , "Niosha and the Blue Dolphin" 2nd Place : Blake Barham, Meridian , Miss. , "The Ant Who Made a Friend"
To honor each of these winners, MPB with its partners - Northpark Mall, Barnes & Noble, and Chick-fil-A at Dogwood Festival Market - hosted a two-day Reading Rainbow Contest Winners Celebration in Jackson .
These kindergarten through third grade students began their first day in the spotlight with sharing their own stories before audiences at Northpark Mall and Barnes & Noble, receiving gift certificates from both establishments, and ended with dinner, compliments of Chick-fil-A at Dogwood Festival Market (more) 2006 MPB Reading Rainbow Contest Winners announced and honored June 26, 2006
The celebration continued the next morning with breakfast and the recording of their stories in the MPB Radio Studio for future broadcast.
