FREE health screenings, LIVE radio broadcast at Mississippi Public Broadcasting ![]() |

( Jackson , Miss.) - Join us at the Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) studios in Jackson on Wednesday, November 15 th , from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the first human organ transplant.
Free blood pressure, blood sugar, vision, and glaucoma screenings will be offered during the entire 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. time frame, along with the opportunity to donate eye glasses to the Mississippi Lions Bank and to donate blood through United Blood Services. Delta State 's School of Nursing students will provide examples of healthy food choices compliments of McAlister's Deli of Richland.
Be a part of the audience during the LIVE, hour-long radio broadcast of MPB's Southern Remedy focusing on organ transplantation airing at 9:00 a.m. from the MPB auditorium.
Hosted by Gene Edwards of MPB and Dr. Rick deShazo of the University Medical Center (UMC), audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding organ transplantation and donation. The show's guests will include two physicians, Dr. Charles Moore and Dr. Darren Schmidt, who work with organ transplant patients at UMC.
After the radio broadcast, a 20-minute special film screening, A Science of Miracles: 50 Years of Organ Transplantation, will be presented by MPB. A panel discussion moderated by Dr. deShazo will follow to provide audience members with additional opportunities to ask related organ transplant questions and to gain insight as physicians, donor families and recipients share their views and personal experiences.
Panel members scheduled are Eddie Payton, Michael Rubenstein, Dr. Moore, Dr. Schmidt, Lynda Richards, Rev. Willie Hart, Dani Edmonson, and Mike Flynt.
Sponsors and participants of this organ transplant awareness event are MPB, UMC, the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA), the Mississippi Lions Bank, United Blood Services, Delta State University 's School of Nursing Program and McAlister's Deli of Richland.
"Whether people wish to come to part or the entire organ transplant awareness event, this provides the opportunity for citizens to help themselves and others, all in the same day," said MPB Community Outreach Coordinator Kathy Broom .
