Mississippians will dig new local MPB TV show

Think “Antiques Roadshow” with treasures much more ancient….

(Jackson, Miss.)- Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s (MPB) “Simply Science at the Fossil Road Show” premieres Thursday, May 15 at 8 p.m. on MPB TV straight from the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science in Jackson.

Filmed during the museum’s annual Fossil Road Show, MPB executive producer Rick Klein says, “Although this program is for all ages, youth are the ones ‘running the show’ as they handle the interviews.  With its fast-paced and varied stories, we’ll jump from touring the museum, to experts identifying what visitors brought to the Road Show, to going on a paleontological dig, to other exciting escapes.”

The show’s hosts are Alyssa Pennington of Jackson, Miss., who attends Chastain Middle School and Power APAC School, and Cory Lee of Pearl, Miss., who attends Brandon High School. Pennington has appeared as an extra and as on-camera talent in the national PBS KIDSâ “Between the Lions,” which is filmed at the MPB studios in Jackson, Miss.  Lee is a theater student who has performed in front of live audiences.

“Each year the Fossil Road Show has grown.  With approximately 170 more attendees this year, it’s the perfect time to leap to the realm of television, says Libby Hartfield, Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Director.  “This is a great example of how our partnership with MPB works to share our museum and its services with a statewide audience.”

Over 900 people packed up their possible fossils and hit the road to participate in the museum’s fifth annual Fossil Road Show with MPB capturing the highlights.  Five paleontologists were on hand to provide the expert answers to their questions.

“He’ll be so disappointed when he finds out it’s just a rock!” said Michelle Dillon, mother of Alex Dillon, of Madison, Miss.  Or will he?  Is it just a rock or not?  Find out which treasures are truly remains of ancient creatures on Thursday, May 15 at 8 p.m. on MPB TV.
