MPB Announces Winners of the 2008 Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest |

(Jackson, Miss.) - Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) announces the winners of the 2008 Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. These fifteen winners from across the state entered their own stories with illustrations for judging and placed, first, second and third in their grades:
Kindergarten
1st place Caylee Bruce of Brandon, Miss. 2nd place Morgan Allyse Breland of Laurel, Miss. 3rd place (T) Ada Fulgham of Ackerman, Miss. Carly Pope of Lucedale, Miss.
1st Grade
1st place Chip Purviance of Brandon, Miss. 2nd place Abby Cannon of Brandon, Miss. 3rd place (T) Brittany Roberson of Brandon, Miss. Seth Ward of Quitman, Miss.
2nd Grade
1st place Julia Bristow of West Point, Miss. 2nd place Winston Charles Bennett of Meridian, Miss. 3rd place Emma Siler of Brookhaven, Miss.
3rd Grade
1st place Renee Prulhiere of Corinth, Miss. 2nd place Kayla Love of Jackson, Miss. 3rd place (T) Lillian Fulgham of Ackerman, Miss. Miller Carlton of Corinth, Miss.
According to MPB Director of Educational Outreach Sharon Person, “MPB received over 200 entries from all across the state representing at least thirty different schools. This contest was a wonderful opportunity for schools and parents to encourage children to create their own stories and to express themselves through creative writing and illustration.”
The contest was conducted in cooperation with MPB and the producers of “Reading Rainbow”, which is broadcast Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. on MPB-TV. Each entrant will receive a special Certificate of Achievement signed by LeVar Burton, host of the Reading Rainbow series.
Each of the winners will receive a “Reading Rainbow” backpack, a DVD copy of a “Reading Rainbow” program, and be treated to a special two-day “2008 MPB Reading Rainbow Winners Celebration Event” in Jackson. The first place winners will advance to the national competition.
