One of the projects that I am working on at home comes from one of those times where one wants to keep the peace. I have 2 daughters. They are getting to the age when they need their own space (and my wife and I could use some quiet.) Until now, the girls have lived in a single room with bunk beds. Luckily, this is quite a large room. The room is a strange, long and skinny shape. It is 10 feet wide and 18 feet long with an extra 5 feet long closet. The idea is simple. Get rid of the closet wall and split the total 23 foot space into 2 rooms, with closets.
In order to get a mental picture of what I wanted the final project to look like, I decided to download an app for my phone. That’s right, I downloaded an app that lets one design homes, rooms, furniture or whatever. Just pinch and tap to build walls, measure spaces, choose furniture shapes, and more. There are many “CAD” type apps for your phone or tablet. I chose one that was free to use personally but not commercially. Within the app, one could purchase more privileges such as printing, creating multiple layouts and choosing color schemes along with other functions.
Even if you are not trying to rebuild a room, these apps can be useful and fun to try. You can re-arrange your living room in the app to see if you like a layout BEFORE you start actually moving furniture. Give it a try. It may spark some ideas for your home.
Stay tuned to Fix It 101 to keep up with the progress of the project “If you two don’t quit I’m going to separate you.”
