Today is the qualifying deadline for those seeking to run for a seat in the Mississippi legislature as well as statewide office. The 174 legislative and all eight statewide office is up for grabs this November. Seven of the statewide offices are currently held by Republicans seeking reelection. Amid the legislative posturing on potential tax cuts, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at how much of our state budget actually comes from the Federal government. On average, about 30 percent of each state's budget actually comes from the Feds through programs like Medicaid, as well as highway funds and other subsidies. Mississippi's percentage is the highest in the country, at nearly 43 percent.
