Veterans organizations are offering medical care and other services at an annual event called a Stand Down. The Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson recently held an annual Stand Down at the Salvation Army. U.S. Army veteran, Freddie Humphreys Jr., spoke at the Stand Down. Having been on the streets before, he says the Homeless Veteran's Program helped him get off drugs, find a home, and a new way of life. He spoke with MPB's Maura Moed.
The massacre of church goers in Charleston, South Carolina, earlier this summer ignited a nationwide discussion about the Confederate battle flag in public life. That discussion reached deep into Mississippi, which still has the battle flag as part of the official state flag. Recently, many notable Mississippians such as John Grisham and Morgan Freeman signed an open letter calling for the state flag to be changed -- with removing the Confederate battle flag as the main goal. Businessman Jim Barksdale was one of the notable Mississippians who signed the letter. He spoke with MPB's Sid Scott about the state flag -- and about why he signed the letter calling for the change.
