Low police salaries across Mississippi may be steering some residents away from a career in law enforcement. A report published by the education and career research website, start-class, claims police in Mississippi may be among lowest paid in the nation. The site also named Jackson, Hattiesburg, Pascagoula and Gulfport among the lowest paying cities in the country. The average police salary in the state is hovering around thirty-two-thousand dollars a year -- or nearly half the national average. We spoke with Lieutenant Jon Traxler of the Hattiesburg Police Department -- who says the relatively low pay may dissuade some from joining the police force.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. About four hundred ten women in Mississippi die each year from the disease. Medical experts are urging men to be aware that breast cancer is not limited to women, although men are one hundred times less likely to develop the disease than women. Doctor Michelle Owens of the University of Mississippi Medical Center says both sexes can develop a fixed, firm lump or mass in the breast area. She spoke with MPB's Maura Moed.
