The fate of same-sex marriage in Mississippi is now in the hands of a federal judge. Judge Carlton Reeves listened to five hours of testimony in Jackson yesterday over whether or not to declare the state's ban on gay marriage unconstitutional. Roberta Kaplan, the attorney for the two lesbian couples challenging the law, says Mississippi should join the 39 other states that recognize same-sex unions. She spoke to MPB's Jeffrey Hess.
Gina and Jennifer Pierce have been married almost a year, but they had to have their wedding out of state. The couple says the most important part of having their marriage recognized by the State would be their daughter. According to current State law, only one of them is recognized as her legal guardian. They, too, spoke with our Jeffrey Hess.
