Mississippi voters will have the opportunity tonight to voice their opinion on how the state's education system will be structured. The first of eight hearings on Initiative forty-two and the alternate measure forty-two-A will be held at the Jackson State University E-Center. Amendment forty-two -- drafted by citizens of the state -- calls for lawmakers to fund an adequate and efficient system of free public schools. The other amendment -- 42-A -- was put on the ballot by legislators. It calls for funding an effective system of free public schools. Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says he's required by law to hold public hearings on both initiatives.
Since 1989, The Ronald McDonald House has provided a home away from home for the families of sick children who travel to Jackson for medical care. The House provides shelter, comfort and support to those who stay there. In addition to this core commitment, the charity has a community grants program that provides further outreach. We spoke with Ruth Ann Allen, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House, about their work.
