Another system of severe storms is set to move through the state today. Forecasters predict possibility for high winds, hail and tornadoes throughout much of the state, with most of the activity focused on the lower half of Mississippi. Supporters of the LGBT community are speaking out against House Bill 1523, which claims to protect individuals from discrimination, who act on religious beliefs that marriage is between one man and one woman. The bill would allow circuit clerks or judges to refuse marriage licenses or to perform marriage ceremonies for gay couples. Former pastor Rob Hill -- state director of the Human Rights Campaign -- is upset the bill has already passed the house. He told MPB's Maura Moed the bill uses religion to violate people's civil rights.
Mississippi gulf coast casinos took in just over one hundred million dollars in January. That's a 15-percent rise over last January and the coast's best year opening since 2008. Michael Bruffey is deputy director of the Mississippi Gaming and Hospitality Association. He told MPB's Evelina Burnett Gulf Coast revenues grew six percent last year and this growth may be due to a flurry of new projects, expansions and renovations in the area.
