For the first time this legislative session, the Mississippi senate has 52 members. For nearly an hour yesterday evening, the Mississippi Senate took up it first real debate of the 2016 session. A special committee recommended the Senate seat Democrat Bob Dearing as the Senator from District 37.

The meeting of a 17-year-old waitress in a small café in Louise, Mississippi led to a 60-year marriage between J.D. Barrett and his beloved Ruth. Barrett sat down with his daughter, Janet Herman last February when the StoryCorps mobile unit came to Jackson. J.D. told Janet a story of love, courtship, and a two-minute wedding. The story is all the more poignant, since J.D. Barrett passed away earlier this month.
As a new year gets started, many are already turning their eyes to tax time -- the annual settling of accounts with the Internal Revenue Service. For many low-to-moderate-income Mississippians, income tax season also is an opportunity for a tax refund that can make a big difference in their family budgeting. Many of these families seek a quick way to get their refund money and end up paying large fees for that service to private companies. But there is another way. The United Way of the Capital Area teams up every year with the IRS to offer the VITA program -- a free tax preparation service. We spoke to Jed Oppenheim -- Director of Community Engagement for the United Way -- about VITA.
