Presidential candidate John Kasich told hundreds of supporters in Gulfport that he's the right person to win the Republican nomination because of his experience and accomplishments.

Ohio Governor John Kasich is the second presidential candidate to visit south Mississippi this year. Donald Trump was in Biloxi last month speaking to a crowd of thousands. Trump’s won three of the four primary contests held so far, including this week in Nevada, but Kasich says, with most primaries still to go, it's early.

“We have 54 of these races all over. We’ve had four. So everybody just needs to chill out. You’ve got a long way to go," Kasich says. "You know enough about football down here. It’s really not about what the score is in the first quarter. It’s what the score is at the end of the game.”

Dan Reid of Hattiesburg says he likes that Kasich, a long-time Congressman, has worked with people from both sides of the aisle.

“I think that he understands you can’t just go to Washington and do something," he says. "And he tells me what he’s going to do, rather than just the outcome. He tells me how he’s going to get there. “

Meg Retersdorf of Pass Christian says Kasich’s appearance affirmed her support for him.

“I think he has the most experience, the best ideas, and I am so glad to be able to look to someone who is not name-calling and fighting among the Republican candidates. I think he’s the best guy for the job, I really do.”

Mississippi’s presidential primary is March 8.
