JACKSON, Miss. – Pregnant women in Mississippi and their babies are at risk for poor health outcomes, including death. Southern Remedy TV will explore the topic in “Surviving Birth” airing at 8 p.m. Monday, April 29 on MPB Television.
The documentary will be available on the MPB Public Media App beginning Wednesday, April 24. A television encore presentation is set for 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5.
In “Surviving Birth,” University of Mississippi Medical Center physicians – two OB/GYNs and one neonatologist – weigh in on conditions such as preeclampsia, diabetes, maternal health and hypertension that contribute to the percentage of preterm deliveries in the state. Couples share their stories of early deliveries and trying to overcome the numerous complications their infants endured.
Southern Remedy MPB Think Radio host Dr. Michelle Owens will share her personal story of nearly dying from complications of a very significant postpartum hemorrhage after giving birth. The documentary also reports on bias within the medical community, particularly toward African-American women.
