Hurricane Nate intensifies to a strong Category 1 Hurricane. It is now expected to make landfall as a Category 2.
Nate upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane overnight and is still intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico. The track has shifted eastward slightly but the Mississippi Coast is still expected to take a direct hit.
Life-threatening storm surge is expected along the Mississippi Coast and around the Mobile Bay area. Storm Surge and Hurricane force winds are still the main concern for our area.
Now is the time to prepare and make evacuation decisions. DO NOT WAIT! If you are in a low lying area and storm surge occurs during hurricane-force winds, emergency officials will not be able to help you.
Hancock County Emergency Management has issued a MANDATORY evacuation for all low lying areas.
Some areas along the Mississippi Gulf Coast could see 6-9 feet or more of storm surge.
