Millions Brave Cold Temperatures and Huge Crowds at the Inauguration in D.C.
Barack Obama is now officially this country's 44th President, and yesterday millions descended on our nations very crowded capital to take part. MPB's Phoebe Judge reports.
President Barack Obama took the oath of office under clear skies and bitterly cold temperatures. Millions streamed into Washington D.C. yesterday to take part in the Inauguration festivities. The crowds growing so large at times that even ticketholders were turned away. The cold temperatures were a factor for many who sought shelter anywhere they could find it. But the freezing temperatures weren’t going to stop Ocean Springs resident Theola Hill from enjoying the day.
"I don't care if ice is all on my head... Or on my feet, I don't care. Today is worth it. I thank God today that I've seen a change".
Many spoke of the historical significance, like Biloxi resident Vernon Magnan.
"This is just overwhelming. You just think about it. Even though we still have a lot of leaps and bounds to overcome, this right here sets the groundwork. Because now I can actually visualize and see that someone that looks like me, and has some of the same thought processes is actually in the Oval Office".
By 6pm a good majority of the millions gathered had dispersed back onto the busses and back into the cars which brought them from all corners of the country. And after enduring the cold and crowds, each one will be able to hold claim to the fact that they were witness to history being made. For MPB News, I'm Phoebe Judge in Washington.
