Swine Flu Confirmed in MS

Health officials are continuing increased monitoring and education about swine flu, following Mississippi’s first 3 confirmed cases. MPB’s Stephen Koranda reports

Health officials expected confirmation of swine flu in Mississippi. Friday State Health Officer Dr. Ed Thompson said swine flu may have been in the state for a month undetected. He says officials will continue to watch the disease during the summer.

“I’d be surprised if it disappeared entirely by the end of the summer. But whether it will continue to be transmitted at the rate we’re seeing now, or whether it will slow or speed up, neither I nor anyone else can say.”

The three cases were in Harrison County, and the patients have recovered. The strain isn’t a killer flu as some people worried during early reports. Dr. Mary Currier is the state epidemiologist.
“Looks in severity just like seasonal flu. This may be something like the illness we usually see in the winter, just at the wrong time of year.”

With that in mind, Dr. Thompson says Mississippians shouldn’t panic.

“We just need to treat this like flu, with respect, but without undue concern other than to take common sense measures and to consult your physician if you become ill. And particularly importantly, don’t go to work sick.”

Thompson also recommends frequent hand washing and covering any sneezes or coughs to help prevent the spread of influenza.
