  • Optimism for the Mississippi economy on the increase
    Economist and officials with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission are becoming increasingly optimistic about the state's economy. While the unemployment rate of four-point-seven percent in December was up from November, officials say it was an improvement from the same month in 2003 and shows a positive trend of more people working and fewer people unemployed.

    At the University Research Center of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, economist Darrin Webb says even though there was a decline in retail sales in November, preliminary data shows an improvement in December and other evidence of an improvement in the state economy overall.
