- All conference
committee meetings now
open to the public
Mississippi legislators
have taken a significant
step toward opening up
the legislative process
to the general public.
Last week, lawmakers adopted
new rules that will give
the public free access
to all conference committee
meetings, including those
for money bills. For years,
conference meetings were
conducted behind closed
doors. Three members of
the House and three from
the Senate would negotiate
final versions of bills
without the public’s
knowledge. But in 2001
legislators opened conference
meetings for general bills
and last week they extended
that openness to appropriations
conferences.
Representative Randy
Pierce is chairman of
the House Education
committee. He says open
meetings are overall
positive, with only
a few negatives. (0:22)
