    Mississippi House Speaker Billy McCoy is promising a House budget proposal today. But Wayne Sorge reports concerned leaders of the state's universities and colleges spent yesterday with a senate sub-committee on appropriations making their case for funding. (1:55)

  • Senate wrestles with budget for higher education while awaiting House budget proposal.
    With the Mississippi House of Representatives scheduled to release it's own plan for balancing the state's budget today, members of the Senate have been meeting with concerned leaders of the state's universities and colleges. With college administrators pleading for a replacement of some 70 million dollars in cuts recommended by the Joint Legislative Budget Committee and with the governor suggesting funds taken from their budgets in recent years should be replaced, the search is on for ways of funding higher education.

    University presidents and Higher Education Commissioner David Potter said without additional funds from the legislature they could have to cut programs or raise tuition.

    Senator Mike Chaney chaired the subcommittee and he says he hopes to fund the colleges and universities as well as possible as he awaits today's budget proposal from the other chamber. (0:22)

    Senate Appropriations Chair Jack Gordon sat in on some of the sub-committee hearings and said for the universities and community colleges as well, it will take $99,700,000 to replace the one-time funds from this year, and he hopes to find that amount. (0:14)

  • Supreme Court changes mass litigation rules
    The Mississippi Supreme Court has changed its rules on how courts in the state will handle mass litigation lawsuits. The changes will limit the number of plaintiffs in a particular case. David Clark is a defense attorney in Jackson. He says the decision by the Supreme Court is a positive step towards a fairer judicial system. (0:21)

    State Representative Ed Blackmon is a trial attorney and Chairman of the House Judiciary A Committee. He thinks the rule change will increase the caseload and possibly clog the judicial system. (0:32)
