  • AARP begins Voices of Civil Rights Project
    Several civil rights organizations are working with the A-A-R-P to assemble documented accounts of the civil rights movement across the country, with much of that history in Mississippi. In a news conference at the Mississippi State Capitol, state A-A-R-P President Mattie Stevens outlined the plans for collecting written and recorded accounts of those who lived through the various stages of the civil rights struggle.   • Advocates for childcare continue their efforts at state capitol
    A group of organizations concerned about the need for more childcare in Mississippi is continuing to try to influence the legislature to approve Senate Bill 2540. The Grassroots Leadership Advocates for Childcare says the bill would cost the state four million dollars but would bring some 12 million additional federal dollars into the state.

    Delores McRight is a spokesperson for the Grassroots Leadership organization and she says there are many reasons the state should subsidize more childcare. (0:29)

    Childcare advocates are insistent, that even in difficult economic times, the state needs to do more to fund childcare. Wayne Sorge reports the organizations pushing for the measure say it's needed and that by not fully funding it..the state is losing federal dollars. (1:31)
