  • Protecting the state from base closures
    The Defense Department has announced plans to close up to 25 percent of the military bases across the country. This morning in Meridian officials from the Governor's office and the Navy Meridian Team were among those discussing ways to protect Meridian's bases from closure.   • Off shore drilling legislation measures approved
    Differences between House and Senate measures will have to be settled, but both chambers of the Mississippi Legislature have approved legislation to set the stage for allowing gas leases on state property off shore in the Gulf of Mexico with the money to go to education. Representative Steve Holland got one amendment to the measure to re-establish a Mineral Lease Commission commission of state officials to manage those leases. (0:29)

    The Mississippi House and Senate have approved measures to authorize leases for off shore gas wells on state property in the Gulf of Mexico. The differences will still have to be resolved, but Wayne Sorge covered the debate in the House. (1:31)
