An experienced Jackson lawyer starts work today as Mississippi's 7th US Circuit Court Judge in Hinds County. As MPB's Carl Gibson reports, the judge already has some tough challenges ahead.

Former Magnolia Bar Association President Malcolm Harrison was sworn in Friday at the Hinds County Courthouse. Harrison says his past legal experience was crucial in preparing him for his new appointment.

"I've done all of it, and all of it will help me become a better judge, will focus me. I am a trial lawyer, I've done trials in court on both the plaintiff and defense side, so that experience will obviously help me as I serve the citizens of Hinds County as a judge."

The swearing-in ceremony was performed by Supreme Court Justice James Kitchens. He says a pressing task for Mississippi's Circuit Court judges will be delayed death penalty appeals.

"A lot of circuit judges all over the state had death penalty matters pending, and some of them had been sitting dormant for a few years, answered some calls on why they hadn't moved those cases along, and hopefully encourage them to get them moving again."

Helping Hinds County keep up with its growing population and culture is the primary task, says Judge Harrison.

"I want to return to an era of judicial consistency, judicial integrity. Our office will be an integral part of moving forward."

Harrison was appointed by Governor Haley Barbour to serve the remainder of former Judge Bobby DeLaughter's term. He says he'll run for a full four-year term in 2011.
