The Radio Garden
The Radio Garden, not even a year old now, is about the size of a pickup truck bed - not very large at all. Since last July we have planted and enjoyed flowers, vegetables, herbs, shrubs, bulbs, and even rooted roses - all done with LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES A WEEK.
It includes a water garden, a container garden, and even night lighting. The purpose is not only to have a nice little garden for all-year enjoyment, but also to encourage new gardeners to start small and have fun. No pesticides are used in this garden - not out of fear or aversion, but simply because in a mixed garden, pests are simply not as severe, and beneficial critters take care of what does pop up.
Last week Felder planted NOTHING in the Radio Garden because he was out of state and then it rained. But he did pull up and compost the faded winter stuff, and dug in some fresh compost, getting ready for this week's planting.
This week he planted butterfly milkweed (Asclepias), dusty miller, purple basil, and some spreading golden moneywort (Lysimachia). There is plenty of room to tuck in more stuff later, but that's enough for one week - and, once he got started, it took less than five minutes - the mosquitoes didn't have time to discover his ankles!
Felder also has a new container garden area in his front yard, in which he grows lots of vegetables, herbs, and a few flowers. To see more, go to www.felderushing.net and click on the "Felderphoto of the Week" link on the upper left hand side of the page.
