The Radio Garden
The Radio Garden, not even a year old now, is about the size of a pickup truck bed - not very large at all. Since last July we have planted and enjoyed flowers, vegetables, herbs, shrubs, bulbs, and even rooted roses - all done with LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES A WEEK.
It includes a water garden, a container garden, and even night lighting. The purpose is not only to have a nice little garden for all-year enjoyment, but also to encourage new gardeners to start small and have fun. No pesticides are used in this garden - not out of fear or aversion, but simply because in a mixed garden, pests are simply not as severe, and beneficial critters take care of what does pop up.
Since I planted some new herbs and flowers last week, and the garden has gotten a good, slow rain soaking, there wasn't much that needed doing. So I spent a couple of minutes "accessorizing" with a recycled Styrofoam (TM) egg carton, turning the soft-tip yucca into an Egg Carton bush (Latin name: Ovi cartonii). Here is an overall shot of the small garden, and a closeup of the yucca. It is not a patented plant, so feel free to make one yourself!
