(Radio Reading Service Broadcast Schedule)

The Radio Reading Service of Mississippi (RRSM) features on-the-air readings of newspapers, books and magazines for persons who are unable to read the printed word, either because of visual handicaps or because of other physical handicaps, such as the inability to turn pages.

Listeners need a special "fixed crystal" receiver to hear the RRSM broadcasts. This receiver is a small table-model radio that is permanently tuned to the RRSM channel. It costs nothing to listen to RRSM, and the Mississippi Legislature has appropriated money to purchase these receivers and donate them to those in need at no cost to them. Application forms for the receivers are available from the RRSM studio.

RRSM is run by a full-time manager, an assistant and a contingent of enthusiastic volunteers. Each day volunteers read local newspapers, including the Clarion-Ledger from Jackson, The Sun Herald from Biloxi and the Copiah County Courier from Hazlehurst, as well as The New York Times, Redbook, Time, American Health, The Christian Science Monitor, Mississippi Magazine and Mississippi Business Journal--in all, 63 magazines and 6 newspapers. The service is available 24 hours a day.
