Josie Bidwell serves as an Assistant Professor at The University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing where she teaches, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Child/Adolescent Health in the undergraduate program. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2004 and her Master of Science in Nursing from the same institution in 2006. She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from UMMC SON in 2013.
She has previously been a clinician in private practice specializing in both internal medicine and pediatrics with a focus on nutrition and diabetes management. She is currently practicing as a family nurse practitioner with University Nursing Faculty Practice through the UMMC School of Nursing's school-based health centers and UNACARE Family Health Center. In January of 1016, Dr. Bidwell was named the Director of Clinical Services for UNACARE Family Health Center.
She has worked with Southern Remedy since 2012. In response to Mississippi’s obesity problem, the Southern Remedy team compiled the Healthy Living Curriculum which is composed of an adult and child nutrition and physical activity program. Dr. Bidwell served as the lead author for both the adult and children’s physical activity curriculum. She serves as a Community Health Advocate Master Trainer to provide nutrition, physical activity, and healthy living training to laypersons and health professional students.
Recently, Dr. Bidwell, together with Dr. Alan Penman in the school of medicine, received grant funding from The Bower Foundation to establish a healthy cooking teaching kitchen in the midtown community of Jackson. This kitchen is aimed at teaching healthy food selection and preparation for people with high blood pressure and diabetes. Dr. Bidwell can be found cooking each week in the Cook Right, Live Well Teaching Kitchen.
Dr. Bidwell is also a licensed fitness instructor. She regularly teaches both Zumba Fitness and Zumba Kids Jr. classes. In 2016, she joined the fitness team at the University Wellness Centers. Dr. Bidwell also serves as a member of the Medical Advisory Committee for all 5 University Wellness Centers to promote and encourage medically integrated fitness.
Her main focus is improving health outcomes for the people of Mississippi through research, education and practice related to healthy lifestyles. Her dedication to this goal has been captured in multiple media formats including print, radio and television.
