Mississippi Roads - (#2908)

Enterprise

Thu, February 26, 2009 at 7:00pm

Mississippi Roads heads east to Clarke County to the quaint little town of Enterprise.

The Chunky River and the Okatibbee Creek intersect to form the Chickaswhay River; where in the early 1700’s a trading post was established here in what later became known as the town of Enterprise.  The town was once the most important market and shipping point in East Mississippi because of its river access to Mobile.

Today, the river is no longer used for shipping; you are more likely to find fisherman or boaters floating along this tranquil waterway.  Dogwoods and wild wisteria hang over the riverbanks which induces a relaxing scenic journey.

And speaking of scenic journeys, in our first story we take you on a picturesque expedition along the winding waters of Red Creek.

So, what do you do when you have deadlines and are swamped with work?  Forget about it all and go float a creek!  Walt Grayson, his wife and a couple of friends did just that under the guise of work, floating on a picturesque creek in Stone County.  Red Creek is one of those places where your cares drift farther and farther away as you drift with the current downstream; until suddenly, the real world looms ahead at the end of the float.  Time well spent; doing nothing.  Drift along with us on Mississippi Roads.

When you come to Enterprise make sure you get out and explore the town.  A good place to start is a picnic at Ritchey Park behind Town Hall.  Some marvelous flowers and a beautiful butterfly garden await you in this scenic setting.

Also check out St. Mary’s Episcopal Church which was built in 1874.  The stained glass windows were imported from England and the original pews and chandeliers are still intact in this wonderful old structure.

There are also many antebellum homes here in Enterprise that continue to maintain their original condition.   If you come over around Christmas a lot of these homes are open for touring through the Enterprise Women’s Club.

As you can see; there is a whole lot to explore in the Clarke County town of Enterprise.

And speaking of exploring, in our next story we explore the rapidly growing sport of disc golf in the state of Mississippi.

Pelahatchie Bay Shore Park is home to the Jackson Union of Disc Golf Enthusiasts (JUDGES). The Judges are dedicated to promoting the fast growing sport of disc golf and have been involved in creating and maintaining several courses in the Jackson area.   Disc golf (also called Frisbee Golf) is a disc game in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target. The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc.

When you come to Enterprise make sure you take a trip out to Long’s Fish Camp for what many people have described to us as the best catfish and coleslaw in the state of Mississippi.  The restaurant is set up like a rustic camp house with wooden tables, benches and hunting and fishing trophies that adorn the walls.

The restaurant is open Thursday through Sunday and has been in operation since 1968.  It is a testament to how hard working Mississippians can create and sustain a successful business.

And speaking of successful businesses, in our next story we travel over to Morton and meet a family whose business is taking bath products to a new ultra cool level.

If you could create an all natural product that keeps you clean, smells great, and actually makes you a little money is something rather special. That’s what the good folks at Dirty Hippie Soaps have done. What started as a backyard hobby in Morton, Mississippi less than a decade ago has now grown into a nationwide business.

They still make each bar from scratch and what started with only one soap fragrance now comes in over thirty different scents. The key to their success is what goes into their soaps. They use only natural ingredients and essential oils. The result is a soap that is environmentally friendly and great for your skin.  http://www.dirtyhippiesoaps.com/
