Our first trip of the new season of Mississippi
Roads takes us up to the tiny town of Tishomingo
in the far northeastern corner of the state.
The town was named in honor of the great chief
of the Chickasaws. The century old buildings
downtown and the breathtaking scenery surrounding
the community provided us with plenty to explore.
Our first story is one of people who follow their hearts. Robert and Tracy
Sugg live in Clinton, Mississippi, where they celebrate their lives and their
Lord through pottery. For their inspiration, they draw from their church
and from their life. Theirs is a mission of beauty and of love.
Poet David Hutto worked out of Mississippi
State University before his retirement. His
poem "When Autumn Comes" celebrates the coming
season. What better place to enjoy the lush
colors and light of fall than in the forests
surrounding Tishomingo. For our second story,
we celebrate our Mississippi written tradition
through pictures and poetry.
If you had traveled all over the world, if
you had known presidents and kings, would you
choose to retire to Tishomingo, Mississippi?
That's exactly what Mr. Robert McAlister did.
A Navy photographer, he was also the official
photographer for the Kennedy Summer White House.
The enduring beauty of these Mississippi
hills is the setting for our Classic Roads
segment. Back in 1983, Mississippi ETV covered
the Dulcimer Festival in nearby Tishomingo
State Park. Tonight, we look at that segment
again -- and see how many things have changed
-- and how many have remained the same!
If only God can make a tree, then surely
He shed His grace on Tishomingo State Park.
Host Walt Grayson takes us on a tour of the
trails and ridges, bridges and cabins that
make this park a perennial treasure. There's
something for everyone in this neck of the
woods.
