We head northwest this week -- to the tiny
town of Vance. Located in the heart of the
Mississippi
Delta, Vance straddles the Quitman and Tallahatchie
County lines. It was named for Civil War veteran
Captain C. B. Vance, and his descendants still
live in and love the community.
Acclaimed author Larry Brown has worked
as a firefighter and even as a field hand.
Maybe that's why his writing has such grit.
The northern
Mississippi native
talks about getting into writing and learning from experience --even from
failure.
Grandson of the community's namesake, E.
Q. Vance II has seen many changes in the Delta.
Modern machinery has taken the place of the
plantation workers, and that has changed Mr.
Vance's neighborhood.
From father to son. E. Q. Vance III lives
in neighboring Sumner. His graphic design business
serves television clients all over the country.
This family could have chosen to live any where
in the world, but they picked the Delta. They
say it's full of God's grace.
Walt's Way takes a different look at the
delta--at its ancient past. Walt Grayson and
Sidney Montgomery scour plowed fields in search
of arrowheads. What do these old tools tell
us about the people who made and used them?
