Although Columbus
has escaped the ravages of war, the community
has quite a military history. That's why
we picked Columbus as the city for our show
honoring veterans.
The 11th Mississippi Infantry Regiment fought
in every major battle of the Civil War, and
the monument to these brave men was recently
dedicated in Gettysburg. Since the park has
discontinued future monuments, this will be
the last one ever erected inside the park.
Each year on flag day, the people in Kosciusko
express their gratitude to veterans by covering
the city with flags. Host Walt Grayson takes
a special look at what freedom means to that
community.
First they had to win the right to fight.
Then they served in combat during WWII. But
their biggest achievement was the integration
of the US Armed Forces. We visit with Tuskegee
Airman Alva N. Temple.
Amory resident Rabbit Kennedy served in WWII,
Korea, and Vietnam. He reached the highest
rank possible for an enlisted man. In our Classic
Roads segment, we visit with Mr. Kennedy.
On May 30, 1868, the people of Columbus placed
flowers on Soldiers' graves in Friendship Cemetery
--both Confederate and Federal soldiers, that
is.
Their action inspired Decoration Day, now called
Memorial Day.
