Early on, Canton
was a farming center. Later, prosperity came
from lumber and railroads. Affluent citizens
built antebellum homes which still stand.
Canton is also known for its Greek Revival
courthouse. It's a community that's distinctly
Southern.
Their motto
and their mission is "Serving God Through
Song." Ever since their beginnings in 1988,
they've been doing just that--all around
the world. We went on tour with the Mississippi
Mass Choir.
To say that
Nancy Grogan restores old buildings in an
understatement. She's found houses and barns
from the 1800's, brought them to Canton,
and reconstructed them. Then she furnished
them with antiques. She even lives in one!
R. L. Burnside
not only continues the tradition of the Mississippi
Blues. He's a master. Born in Coldwater in
1926, he learned to play the guitar by watching
neighbors. We caught his beat in both public
and private performance.
What brings
50,000 visitors and over 1200 artists from
35 states to Mississippi? It's the Canton
Flea Market, and it happens twice a year.
In Classic Roads, we revisit an event known
throughout the South.
Walt Grayson
calls the Delta in winter a magical land.
On Walt's Way, he takes us on a tour of this
fertile land as it lies fallow. It's a place
for imagination.
