We come to you this week from the grounds of
Rose Hill Cemetery in Meridian. We bring you
a very special edition of Mississippi Roads;
one that we like to call haunting Mississippi.
Rose
Hill Cemetery is the final resting place of
the King and Queen of the gypsies. Queen Kelly
Mitchell was giving birth to her 14th or 15th
child in rural Alabama when she begin to experience
problems. Her husband, King Emil Mitchell summoned
a country doctor and offered him ten thousand
dollars to save his wife but his efforts were
unsuccessful and the body was transported to
Meridian. The body was guarded for 12 days as
gypsies from around the country gathered for
the queens funeral in January 1915.
Some
20,000 people gathered for her funeral at St.
Paul's Episcopal Church. The casket was said
to be valued at fifteen thousand dollars and
many valuable gold coins and jewelry were placed
inside the coffin. The casket was lowered into
a steel vault and covered with bars to keep
potential grave robbers away from the valuable
loot inside the grave; which some have valued
to be worth close a million dollars.
Over
the years several attempts have been made by
would be grave robbers but all of their actions
have been failures. Today, gypsies continue
to visit Ross Hill Cemetery on a regular basis
to pay their respects to the king and queen.
They often leave food, drink, money and trinkets
at the grave site.
In
our first story, we take you to another cemetery;
this one is in Natchez and it comes alive once
a year when the sun goes down and the spirits
began to move. Angels on the Bluff is the name
of this nocturnal event.
The
Deason House in Jones County has a lot of history
associated with the home; as well as, some spirits
from the days of the Civil War.
Temple
Heights in Columbus, Mississippi is a home where
some strange happenings have occurred over the
years.
In
our final story for the night, Walt brings you
on an overnight stay at a haunted house.
