We come to you from the intersection of state
Highways 15 and 18; in one of the state's
leading
small cities, we are in the town of Bay Springs.
In the
latter part of the 1800's Joe Blankenship founded
sawmills in the dense, virgin forests of western
Jasper County. At the turn of the century, Blankenship's
son-in-law, L. L. Denson, through the Denson
Trading Company, founded a village called "Bay
Springs" the town was named for an artesian
spring flowing from the trunk of a bay tree.
Supported
by the sawmills, the community quickly became
a trade center for western Jasper and eastern
Smith County. Before 1918, Bay Springs obtained
electrical and telephone service and soon thereafter
an ice house, placing the town on the cutting
edge of gracious living. Throughout the twentieth
century, Bay Springs has continued to be a beautiful,
thriving city, expanding in territory and population.
The
spring flowing under this gazebo today is that
same artesian spring that the city was named
for over a hundred years ago. Since 1993 Bay
Springs has been honored by the Mississippi
Municipal League as one of the "Most Liveable
Communities" in the state.
In
our first story we take you to the state's only
open-air jazz festival that just happens to
be held in the town of Bay Springs. It's called
Jazz in the Grove and the sounds are sure to
please.
In
Utica, Camp Dream Street is tailored for special
kids but we find out that the councilors benefit
from the experience as much as the campers.
Mt.
Olive native Billy Ray Reynolds had a hand in
the outlaw movement in country music. He played
with Waylon Jennings for years and has recently
released his own CD from his present home in
Nashville.
Host
Walt Grayson takes us on an overnight adventure
to Dunn's Falls. Where the falls and old mill
are yours to explore during the magical hours.
