The community which is referred to by locals as “The Kill” is located thirteen miles northwest of Bay St. Louis. It was named for the huge kilns that early French settlers used to burn charcoal. In the late 1800’s, the timber industry became prosperous and the Kiln was once touted as having the largest sawmill in the South.
Hancock High School in Kiln is where Kiln native Brett Favre got his start at developing into the MVP quarterback that he is today. He was coached here by his late father Big Irv Favre but he didn’t get to show off that gunslinger arm much in high school because his father preferred to mostly run the ball on offense. Thus the only school to offer Brett a scholarship to play football was the University of Southern Mississippi and they recruited him to play defensive back.
Today everyone knows about the gutsy Mississippi kid that plays for the Green Bay Packers who recently set the career touchdown pass record in the NFL.
And speaking of the NFL, the Saints have been calling Jackson their summer home for the past few years.
Millsaps College has hosted the New Orleans Saints the past two summers as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season. With sweltering heat and two a day practices fans continue to flock to the college campus to catch a glimpse of their favorite Saint. http://www.neworleanssaints.com/Home.aspx
The Hancock County Equine and Livestock Arena in Kiln is a great place for families. Numerous events are held here throughout the year like: the county fair, rodeos, music festivals, 4-H shows and roping competitions.
In our next story, we take you to another spot in Kiln that is also appealing to the entire family; especially in the fall.
Life here around The Kiln is going to be divided into before Katrina and after Katina for a long time to come. Southern Promisland Farm in Kiln is doing their part to bring a little joy back to the lives of people along the coast. They have built a corn maze; a follow-the-line puzzle all grown up and life size. They’re popping up all over. And this one is an area playground that attracts folks from as far away as New Orleans.
Legend has it that Kiln was known as the moonshine capital of the world during the bootlegging days of prohibition. But today, the Broke Spoke serves as the legal watering hole and a highly sought out destination for Green Bay Packer fans from around the country to drop in and pay tribute to their beloved quarterback and have a cold one.
In our next story, we visit another Kiln business that is becoming well known for their quality brew.
