Gulf States News Hub Regional Reporter: Criminal Justice

TITLE OF POSITION: Gulf States News Hub Regional Reporter: Criminal Justice

DEPARTMENT: News & Public Affairs

ANNUAL ENTRY SALARY: Competitive

JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:

NPR and its member stations are creating an innovative system of regional news hubs designed to reshape the journalism landscape -- and we’re building one of the first hubs in the Gulf States. Public radio stations in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi are partnering with NPR to launch the Gulf States Regional Newsroom. Our goal is to plan coverage together, share resources and add reporting in parts of the region where local news outlets are folding. To do this, we are hiring a team of regional beat reporters. We are looking for an experienced reporter to travel across the Gulf States region to cover criminal justice. The reporter will spot trends and patterns in the three states, where incarceration rates are among the highest in the country, health care in prisons is poor, and the court systems are over-burdened and under-funded. The reporter will tell stories that are emblematic of the challenges of criminal justice and explore programs that are making a difference and might hold lessons for another place. The criminal justice reporter will be based at MPB in Jackson, MS, and will also work closely with WBHM in Birmingham, AL, and WWNO in New Orleans. These are the three partner stations in the Regional Newsroom collaboration. This is a 3-year, grant-funded position. The group intends to raise funds to sustain the position beyond that period. This position is classified as Non-State Service, Exempt. EOE M-F
