June MPB Classics television programs highlight Mississippi’s contribution to science, nature

JACKSON, Miss.Science & Nature  is the title of the MPB Classics series for June 2021. This collection highlights Mississippi’s scientific contributions, conservation efforts and natural beauty. 

MPB Classics is a collection of original television programs by Mississippi Public Broadcasting. The programs document the local culture and history of Mississippi through literature, visual arts, folklore, music, storytellers and more.

Every month for the next three years, a new set of MPB Classics programs will be available for free on-demand viewing at video.mpbonline.org for two months. Afterward, they will be accessible through MPB Passport for paid subscribers. 

The June 2021 MPB Classics series Science & Nature will be available for free on-demand viewing until August 31. The series includes the following:  

  • Dr. Arthur C. Guyton: Searching for Truths (1992)

Dr. Arthur C. Guyton became an icon in the world of medical research and education. He pioneered new techniques in medical research, made groundbreaking discoveries regarding blood pressure and authored The Textbook of Medical Physiology all while adjusting to life after a life-threatening polio diagnosis.

  • The Singing River: Rhythms of Nature (2003)

An hour-long documentary on the Pascagoula River in southern Mississippi and the many conservation efforts associated with it. We explore the cultural, economic and ecological significance of the last unimpeded river system in the continental United States. The documentary is narrated by Gerald McRaney.

  • Sound or Silence: Wild Heritage Mississippi (1979)

How have Mississippians’ relationship to the environment changed over time? What does the word “land” mean to different people? What is humanity’s place in the natural world? Conservationist, musician and radio personality Paul Ott presents many possible answers to these questions.
