In the times we are currently living, one must have digital etiquette. Teachers, students, and parents are using the internet more often for daily tasks. Digital etiquette should mirror how someone acts within everyday situations. I chose to share a few of Sherri Gordon’s digital tips from her online article on VeryWellFamily.com:
1.) “Treat others as you would want to be treated.”
I would suggest that you treat others (teachers, classmates, and other individuals- via the web) better than you would treat yourself. It is through this practice that you should learn to be slow to speak and quick to hear, which can also enhance the learning experience.
2.) “Keep messages positive and truthful.”
“Encourage kids to censor their messages and posts to be sure they are not sarcastic, negative or rude. They also should avoid posting anything that is not true such as rumors or gossip. Kids also should know what cyberbullying is and that they should never engage in that type of behavior.” In this current time, suicide is on the increase. According to the National Institution of Mental Health, "Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Reports, in 2018:
- Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 48,000 people.
- Suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34 (NIMH, 2020).
3.) “Double-check before hitting send.”
Everyone should double-check all work before submitting. Double-checking your work shows the person on the receiving end that you care about what you are conveying. Aligning yourself with these tips are the first steps toward having a safe and prosperous online environment, conducive to learning.
In conclusion, the purpose of online remote learning is to learn. It is not the time to procrastinate. Please take time to ensure that you, your children and students stay on task.
