Gov. Tate Reeves Speaking at News Conference About Coronavirus

State officials are urging Mississippians to be vigilant in protecting themselves and checking on others, as they prepare for the expected Coronavirus surge. MPB’s Desare Frazier reports.

Governor Tate Reeves says he’s worried about the emotional toll the Coronavirus statewide shutdown may have on people. He says some Mississippians have lost jobs, wondering how they’ll pay their bills—others are home alone. He stressed these two weeks are critical to lessen the number of cases. His message to all Mississippians at a news conference:

“We need you to be strong. We need you to be smart. We need you to step up in this dangerous time and look out for your community. You may be at home but you are not truly alone. There are three million Mississippians in this fight with you,” said Reeves.

Reeves is asking people to practice social distancing but check on neighbors and friends. State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers stressed people who’ve been tested for the Coronavirus should stay home while they wait for the results. He offered advice on handling pets after a tiger at a New York Zoo was infected by a worker.

“Our recommendation for individuals who are infected with Covid 19 is to allow other family members to take care of that pet or to have some distancing from that pet, if you’re the primary caregiver,” said Byers.

Byers says research doesn’t show people can be infected by their pets. Also, Mississippi Emergency Management has a new website. They want to have a database of products and services businesses in the state can provide during a crisis. That website address is: msbeoc.org.
