Gulf Coast Residents Weigh In On Syria

Mississippi Coast residents are weighing in on whether the U.S. should take military action in Syria. MPB's Evelina Burnett reports they had a chance yesterday to share their opinion with Mississippi's 4th District Representative Steven Palazzo.

More than 30 people gathered at a luncheon meeting in Gulfport yesterday to hear from Congressman Palazzo. The talk soon turned to Syria. The congressman says he's been hearing on the issue from his constituents, and 75 to 80 percent are not in favor of American involvement. He says he thinks they may be right because, he says, the U.S. does not have Middle East strategy.

At the luncheon, most people who voiced an opinion also said they’re against U.S. military action in Syria. A number of people said they weren't in favor of getting involved unless there's an immediate threat to American interests. Ken Cole of Gulfport believes the U.S. needs to slow down.

Liza Hiles of Ocean Springs says the United States needs to focus on fixing its problems at home.

Palazzo, who’s a member of House Armed Services Committee, says he’ll make a final decision after he receives more information on the issue when he returns to Washington next week.
