Governor Tate Reeves says the state is seeing a reduction in the number of coronavirus cases with 781 reported yesterday. He says last Wednesday that number was 904. He’s urging Mississippians to continue to wear masks, social distance and avoid large gatherings this Labor Day Weekend.

“Please this weekend have a cookout in your backyard with your kids and only your kids, the ones you live with. Do our best to avoid huge gatherings and if we can all do that, we can get through this safely,” said Reeves.

State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs says during the Memorial and July 4th holidays there were massive increases in coronavirus cases and deaths. He says it’s even more critical with reopening schools that people adhere to the guidelines. Dobbs says there are more than 500 teachers and 3,700 students quarantined. He also said a child between 1 and 5 years old died from coronavirus-related Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome.

“Very sad and a powerful reminder that even though most people get over it just fine, even young healthy people can die from it,” said Dobbs.

Governor Reeves also announced the launch of a $19 million dollar program to provide personal protective equipment and testing to long term care facilities. CARES Act money is funding the project, which is being administered by the Mississippi Development Authority.
