The Federal Aviation Administration is reducing flight capacity at dozens of major U.S. airports because of staffing shortages and safety concerns. None of Mississippi’s eight commercial airports are currently on that list, and airport officials say disruptions have been limited to minor delays caused by congestion at larger hubs.
According to FlightAware, over 1,200 flights were canceled nationwide on Tuesday. Only ten of those involved Mississippi airports, including eight at Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport and two at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
West Dodd of Madison was on vacation in Las Vegas when he saw news about the flight cuts and long airport lines, but says his return trip was smooth.
“We went from Las Vegas to Nashville and back into Jackson on Southwest, like clockwork,” Dodd said. “In fact, we actually got in the airport about 15 minutes before scheduled time.”
The FAA says flight reductions will grow from 4 percent to 10 percent in the coming week as the shutdown continues. Airport officials in Mississippi encourage travelers to keep monitoring their flight status before heading to the airport in case conditions change.
