Roger Wicker represents Mississippi in the U.S. Senate alongside fellow Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith. He's had the job since 2007.
In January of this year, Wicker thrust himself into a national conversation around President Biden's pick to replace outgoing Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. At the time, Biden had not named a specific nominee, but had pledged to nominate a Black woman. Wicker disparaged that promise during an appearance on conservative radio station Supertalk, claiming that Biden's nominee would inevitably be a beneficiary of "affirmative racial discrimination."
In the time since, Biden did indeed nominate a Black woman-- former federal judge Ketanji Brown Jackson-- to Breyer's open seat. On Friday, Wicker said he intends to vote against her confirmation.
