Cullen Ledet of Metairie, is ready to head home. He says he and his family have been going from hotel to hotel in the Jackson metro area, as rooms became available since last Saturday. He says their house is intact.
“We live in an area that wasn’t badly hit. It’s bad enough. But we weren’t badly hit that they couldn’t at least give us power or water, one of the two. If we get one of the two we’ll probably go back and deal without the other one,” said Ledet.
Charles Johnson of Chalmette, and his family evacuated to a Louisiana hotel on higher ground until the power went out. He says they drove to Jackson Tuesday.
“And we couldn’t find a gas station. Somebody had to give us some gas and we just got on the road, came out here and we called around and we still don’t have lights. So now we’re just spending money that we don’t have trying to survive,” said Johnson.
Wednesday Governor Tate Reeves talked about deploying emergency crews to Louisiana including members of the Mississippi National Guard.
"A police company from the Mississippi National Guard and an engineering company,” said Reeves.
Evacuees say some areas have power but it’s scattered. Claudia Seligman of Mandeville is at a hotel in Flowood. She says she’ll stay put.
“Grocery stores right now have limited hours and really don’t have a lot of items and it’s more important to let first responders, power companies, tree removal people and everybody have full access to everywhere,” said Seligman.
There are two shelters open just for Louisiana evacuees; one in Hinds and another one in Hancock County. Information about resources for Hurricane Ida evacuees can be found on MEMA’s website at msema.org.
